District 5240

Incoming Presidents Retreat

September 8-10, 2006

The Historic Santa Maria Inn

We promised Incoming Presidents at Mid-Terms last January and again at the District Assemblies that we respect your time and would plan each meeting to cover what you need to know as club president.

The idea is to have each meeting build on previous meetings and not be repetitious except where repetition is really important.

That’s why we are so grateful to our speakers at the Retreat who covered a whole range of important topics, each with their own presentation style:

Ray Smith, computer/website expert and stand-up comedian, showed us how Ojai-West documented the dictionary project   online to share with other clubs. Ray took the Retreat photos in this section of the website.  Click HERE to Email Ray. Right-Click HERE to download his PowerPoint presentation.

Byron Briley gave us his inspiring “nightingale” presentation on RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Identify and sign up good RYLA students ASAP.

PDG Arnie Dowdy and Maria Berntson provided an overview of giving to The Rotary Foundation and applying for Matching Grants from the Foundation.

Jack McClenahan demonstrated his ideas about how to run a club meeting, did a fun “Lend A Hand” Partner presentation with Maria Dowdy, and also introduced the Tentative Schedule of DG Club Visits in 2007-08.

PDG Jock MacKenzie was a good sport about my “Beary Good Rotarian” Teddy bear with its little Marine uniform. He described our Club Mentoring Program.

PDG Jan Lindsay presented thought-provoking statistics on world poverty and previewed the Conference on Poverty in the Americas, November 18 at CSUCI. Jan also previewed the LA2008 convention, as detailed later in this newsletter.

Yes, our Retreat speakers were great but so were the participants. Thank you, Incoming Presidents, AGs, and GRs for asking questions and sharing your own experiences with issues like proper handling of funds in club accounts and club foundation accounts.

Extra special thanks to the Santa Maria Inn staff, Sales Manager Betty Reed, and General Manager John Reinacher, current president of Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Club. They did a super job handling every aspect of our Incoming Presidents Retreat!

As always, we must thank Nancy Falconer for handling the registration and payment process.

-- Jack McClenahan
